SETTINGS ON THE WATCH Hold UP, pick Watch Face, select Birdwatch, press START, then Customize. The menu is drawn in the style of the face: your Bird log, the Birds gallery, a short How it works guide, the sky and the season with a live preview, the three pills under the branch, the lively birds and the always-on brightness. The same settings are in Garmin Connect if you prefer the phone. BIRDS AT YOUR WINDOW A round wooden window looks onto a branch and wooded hills. When you raise your wrist, the birds flick their tails, turn around and hop, and leaves, petals or snowflakes drift down. You can switch the movement off in the menu. YOUR STEPS BRING THE BIRDS Each day you reach the step goal set on your watch is a goal day. The leaves grow with your goal days of the last seven days, and thin out a little when you rest. New birds arrive as your goal days add up: robin and blue tit from the first day, then goldfinch, cardinal, blue jay, bullfinch, kingfisher, woodpecker, hoopoe, waxwing, golden oriole and, after sixty goal days, a barn owl. A new arrival is announced on the face. Up to four birds sit on the branch at once: the newest one, and the others in turn from day to day. THE TREE FOLLOWS THE SEASONS By default the tree follows the calendar of the northern hemisphere, and you can switch to the southern one or pick a season: blossom and falling petals in spring, deep green in summer, orange leaves falling in autumn, snow on the branch, red berries and snowflakes in winter. DAY, DUSK AND NIGHT By default the sky follows the time of day: day from 7 am, dusk from 5 pm, night from 8 pm. You can also keep one sky. At night the birds sleep, all but the barn owl. BIRD LOG AND GALLERY The Bird log in the menu shows how many birds you have, the next one and how many goal days it takes, your total, current and best streak and the last seven days. The Birds gallery shows the twelve birds, one per page: the ones still to come are silhouettes. On watches with a touchscreen, press and hold the face to see the log over the branch. Hold again to hide it. Nothing leaves the watch. ON THE FACE Big time and date in the sky, three pills under the branch. Pick what each pill shows: steps, heart rate, watch battery, Body Battery, calories, floors, distance, intensity minutes, notifications or temperature. If your watch has no value, the pill shows -- rather than a made-up number. ALWAYS-ON A separate always-on design on a black screen: thin time, date and one outlined bird on a branch. It shifts slightly every minute to protect the screen. A brighter option is in the menu. FREE VERSION Birdwatch Lite is free: the day window with the robin and the blue tit.
