Lost your friends on the trail, at a festival or on the slopes? Group Beacon shows where everyone in your group is, right on your wrist. One person starts a session and gets a 6-digit code. Everyone else types it in. From then on, each watch shows the others on a radar, with their name, distance and direction. HOW IT WORKS • Start a session, or join one with its 6-digit code • The radar turns with your compass, so the top of the screen is where you are facing • Each friend sits at their real distance and direction, with their name beside them • Moving friends are arrows pointing the way they are going; friends standing still are dots • A friend whose position is out of date turns grey • The radar zooms itself to fit everyone, from 100 m to 25 km WHAT IT SHOWS • Compass rose with N, NE, E... around the radar, north in red • Your group's code and how many people are in it • Select a friend to see their name, exact distance and an arrow pointing to them • Friends further away than the radar's range sit on its edge, so nobody gets lost off screen BUTTONS AND TOUCH • DOWN / UP, or swipe up / down: go through your friends one by one, then back to the full radar • START or tap: zoom in one step. Past 100 m it goes back to automatic zoom • Hold UP (menu): show the session code, back to automatic zoom, or leave the session • BACK: close the app. Your session is kept, and "Resume" in the start menu takes you back in SESSIONS • Up to 10 people per session • No accounts and no sign-up. Pick the name the others see in the app's settings in Garmin Connect • Choose how often positions are shared: every 3, 5 or 10 seconds (settings in Garmin Connect) • A session closes by itself after 4 hours without anyone using it, or as soon as the last person leaves SETUP 1. Install Group Beacon on everyone's watch and open it with the phone nearby, connected to Garmin Connect. 2. Allow the permissions when asked. 3. One person chooses "Create session" and reads out the code. The others choose "Join session" and enter it. 4. Go outside and wait for GPS. GOOD TO KNOW • Every watch needs its phone nearby with Garmin Connect and mobile data. Positions travel watch → phone → Group Beacon server → the others' phones → their watches. • Calibrate the compass in your watch's sensor settings if the radar does not line up with the real directions. • Watches without a compass turn the radar from your GPS direction while you walk, and show north up while you stand still. • Uses GPS and the compass while open. Close the app when you are done to save battery. A longer sync interval also saves battery and data. • Distances are straight lines, not along trails or roads. PRIVACY While you are in a session, your position, your direction and speed of travel, and the name you chose are sent to the Group Beacon server through your phone and shared with the people in the same session, and no one else. The session and everything in it are deleted when it closes. There are no accounts, no analytics and no advertising. See the privacy policy. This is an independent app. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Garmin. Group Beacon is a convenience for finding your friends, not a safety or rescue device: do not rely on it in an emergency.
