Description

EdgeECU turns your Edge into an instrument cluster. Power sits on a rev counter, marked out in YOUR zones. Heart rate drives a coolant temperature gauge up the right. Your anaerobic reserve drains and refills in the W'OS Bottle up the left. Shift lights across the top fill as you climb the zones, and flash once you pass the redline. It takes the whole screen. It is a data field, not an app, so Garmin carries on recording, navigating and alerting underneath it. Free to ride. No trial, no expiry. USD 4.99 unlocks the customisation. WHAT IT SHOWS - A power tachometer on your own zones, with 3-second power in the dial - Shift lights, one per zone, top lamp flashing past the redline - The W'OS Bottle: W' balance draining and refilling in real time - Heart rate as engine temperature, scaled to your own numbers - Your drivetrain drawn to scale, if you ride electronic shifting - Speed, timer, gear, distance and a row of extras, chosen from 26 metrics - Wind direction relative to your heading, air temperature, clock, battery SETTING IT UP 1. Install it. It appears in the data field list, not the apps list. 2. On the Edge: activity profile, Data Screens, add a screen, and pick the SINGLE field layout. 3. Pick EdgeECU from the Connect IQ section. 4. Ride. Settings live in the Connect IQ app on your phone. IF THE DIAL IS GREY Some Edge models will not give their power zones to a data field. Enter your FTP in the app's settings and the scale comes back. Same for maximum heart rate and the temperature gauge. WHAT YOU NEED Nothing to start with. Speed, distance, timers, altitude, clock and battery all come from your Edge. - A POWER METER for the tachometer, shift lights, zone box and W'OS Bottle. Without one the dial draws its scale and parks the needle. - A HEART RATE STRAP for the temperature gauge and the heart-rate warning. - ELECTRONIC SHIFTING (Di2, AXS, EPS) for the drivetrain picture. Without it the band still shows the gear whenever your Edge reports one. - A PAIRED PHONE for wind and air temperature. Those come from Garmin's weather service, not from anything on the bike. NUMBERS YOU ENTER FTP on your Edge or in settings. This gives the dial its scale. Max heart rate on your Edge or in settings. The top of the gauge. W' capacity in settings, in joules. Most riders are 15000 to 30000. THE W'OS BOTTLE W' is your anaerobic work capacity: the joules you can spend above critical power before you have to ease off. The bottle shows what is left, draining above CP and refilling below. IT IS AT ITS BEST IF YOU KNOW YOUR OWN CP AND W' FIGURES, from a test or from your training software. Guess the capacity and the bottle will mislead you: it will empty far too early, or never empty at all. The rest of the panel works without it. WHAT IT RECORDS W' balance is written into the ride file every second, so it turns up as its own graph in Garmin Connect and in TrainingPeaks. WHAT IT COSTS USD 4.99, once, unlocks the customisation: what each cell shows, how many cells the bottom row holds on a large screen, the heart-rate warning threshold, and the two warnings. One payment, not a subscription. To unlock, change one of those settings and stop the bike. A six-digit code appears on the panel. Type it in at kzl.io/code. The code is sent through your phone, so keep it with you and connected. It can take a few minutes, and the panel shows GETTING YOUR CODE until it does. Your FTP, maximum heart rate and W' capacity are never locked. WARNINGS Drop below 5% of your reserve, or come within a few beats of your maximum heart rate, and the panel flashes a warning, then leaves a small mark until you recover. Anything it cannot read shows dashes, never a zero. A zero looks like a measurement. W' balance is an estimate from a published model. It is there to help you pace, not as a health measurement. For the Edge 850, 550 and 1050. Also runs on the 1040, 840 and 540.
