Description

How many times have you wanted to know how long to the next checkpoint? You asked a volunteer, then got angry at how far off they were. HowFar puts the answer on your wrist. While you follow a course, it shows: - the name of the next checkpoint - the time to get there, while you keep moving - the time of day you'll arrive - on a full data screen, with a course profile: the points before and after it, in the order you meet them This is a beta. HowFar is new, and real races are what make it better: try it and tell us how it did, good or bad. The more feedback, the better. Feedback form: https://github.com/howfar-garmin/howfar/issues/new?template=feedback.yml (or Contact Developer on this page). Made for long trail runs and ultras, 25 km and more, with real climbs and descents. That's where your average pace says little about the climb ahead, and where HowFar does much better. It isn't meant for a flat 5 or 10 km: there your average pace already works. Nothing to set up: it learns how fast you go on every slope while you run, from steep descents to steep climbs, and keeps learning all race long. It remembers your past runs, follows you when you slow down or pick up again, and corrects for your watch measuring more distance than the course map. Before the race, take a few minutes on the race prep page of the website. From your race's course file it makes a course profile to paste into HowFar's settings, so HowFar knows every climb and descent between checkpoints and can show the points around the next one. There you can also add points: the top and bottom of every climb and named huts and villages, found for you, or your own. Make main the points where you stop or face a cutoff, and minor the landmarks in between, shown on the way. It's optional, and the website explains it step by step in English, Italian, French and German. On older watches with less memory (the first Enduro, fēnix 5, 5S, 6 and 6S, Forerunner 935, Instinct 2, 2S, 2X and Crossover), HowFar runs in a lite version: it has no course profile, so it counts down to the course points the watch knows, from the average slope to each, and shows no points around them. It still learns your pace on every slope and remembers your past runs. Works without a phone or signal during the race. Time spent stopped at aid stations is not counted.
