Garmin Body Battery: how much should it charge overnight?
Body Battery runs from 5 to 100. Rest charges it, stress and activity drain it. There is no official morning target, so the useful question is whether the overnight charge matches your sleep and your own pattern.

Why it never gets above 50
First check how long you slept. Under six hours, the answer is usually the night itself. If you slept seven hours or more and the peak is still under 50, open the overnight stress graph: alcohol, a late meal, a late hard session, illness and evening stress keep the body in a stressed state, and Body Battery only charges in rest.
If the stress graph is flat and low overnight and the morning peak still does not move, the problem is more likely the device: a loose strap, a night without the watch, or a lost baseline.
What actually changes it
- Keep a consistent bedtime. Body Battery follows the routine, not one good night.
- No alcohol within three hours of bed.
- Finish eating two to three hours before bed.
- Take 30 quiet minutes before sleep, away from screens and work.
- Wear the watch overnight and snug; the charge is measured from heart rate and HRV.
- Move hard sessions earlier in the day so the evening can recharge.
- Read the overnight stress graph, not only the single score.
Is a morning peak of 50 normal?
There is no universal normal morning value. Garmin's own guidance is to compare your days with your own pattern: 50 after a short night and 50 after eight hours mean different things, and the trend over a week says more than any single morning.
A single low morning is not a diagnosis. Illness, alcohol and stress all show up in the score before they show up anywhere else, which is what makes the number useful as a heads-up rather than a verdict.
Questions that come up
My Body Battery never reaches 100. Is something wrong?
Not necessarily. Reaching 100 needs a long, undisturbed night with low stress. Most people who train regularly peak in the 70s or 80s and still recover well, as long as the pattern is stable.
Why does my Body Battery drop during the day even when I sit still?
The score follows physiological stress, not how busy you feel. Illness, alcohol, caffeine late in the day and mental stress can all keep it draining while you rest.
Should I train when my morning charge is low?
This page will not decide that for you. An easy session is usually fine. If the charge is low for several days in a row, or it comes with a clearly higher resting heart rate or feeling unwell, resting or seeing a doctor is the safer choice.
