A rugged, richly detailed instrument panel for every day. The dial is a machined expedition instrument — stepped bevels, recessed display windows with chamfered frames and tiny screws, engraved contour and hatch detail, inlaid luminous lines — and every window carries live data. Big, sharp digital time sits in the main window, with two data panels above and two below. Battery and step-goal progress run in the left and right gauge channels, and a compact daylight bar shows how much of today's daylight has passed, calculated from real sunrise and sunset times. Built for readability first: the artwork frames the numbers but never sits behind them. Presets: Polar, Desert, Night Ops. Polar: grade-5 titanium with glacier-blue enamel and cyan lume lines. Desert: dark bronze and burnished brass with amber lines and dune engraving. Night Ops: olive-black ceramic and black PVD steel with muted green lume. An optional accent colour can override the preset accent. Features: • Large digital time with 12/24-hour support (follows the watch by default) • Four configurable data panels: heart rate, steps, calories, battery, distance, floors, altitude, temperature (Garmin weather), sunrise, sunset, step goal, active minutes • Battery arc and step-goal arc on the perimeter; the step arc shows a completion cap when the goal is reached • Daylight indicator from real sunrise/sunset times, with honest handling of night and missing location • Optional outer minute scale • Localized date in the watch language • Sparse always-on mode for AMOLED watches: time, battery and minimal ticks, kept below Garmin's 10% lit-pixel limit • Dedicated 64-colour styling for MIP (transflective) screens When data is missing: • Heart rate, distance, floors etc. show a dash (--) when the watch has no value — never a made-up number. • Temperature older than 3 hours is treated as unavailable rather than shown as current. • Default panels that have no data (temperature, altitude) switch to calories / floors so the panel stays useful. • Without a known location (no recent GPS activity or weather fix) the daylight bar shows SUN --:--. In polar day or night (no sunrise/sunset) it also shows dashes. • If no step goal is set, the step arc stays empty instead of dividing by zero. Customise it in the Garmin Connect app → Watch faces → Expedition Instrument → Settings. Privacy: no internet access, no accounts, no tracking — all data stays on the watch. Screenshots are from the Connect IQ simulator; step values in them are test data.
