설명
PANEL is an instrument cluster for your wrist. Six small rings sit quietly in the
corner of the face and only speak up when something actually needs you.
THE RINGS
- Every ring has three states, and they are drawn so you can tell them apart at a
glance: a hairline arc when the reading is fine and you can ignore it, a solid arc
while it is in progress, and an inverted badge when it is time to act.
- Only three readings can raise a badge, because only three have a threshold that
published work supports. A face that alarms every day is not information, it is
background noise.
- M — sitting. Fills over 30 minutes, not an hour. A 2024 meta-analysis of 13
randomised trials found that interrupting sitting every 30 minutes with a short
walk lowers post-meal glucose, while hourly breaks do not. Garmin's own move bar
runs on an hourly cycle, so PANEL keeps its own.
- R — Body Battery, flagged below 25, Garmin's own "low" band.
- B — watch battery, flagged below 20 percent.
- The other three (daylight, steps, heart rate) show where you are and nothing more.
A watch face should not issue medical warnings.
- Ten marks around each ring at ten percent intervals, so you can count how full it
is instead of guessing.
- The seconds keep running in low power, so the register is never showing a stale number.
TIME
- One row, as large as the case allows, in a typeface baked for this screen. Digit
width and stroke weight were chosen by measuring which pairs of numerals become
confusable at a distance, with the glare of white-on-black included.
- A seconds register: a hairline track with the elapsed part drawn over it in a
heavy arc, and the exact second in the middle. Two layers, nothing else.
- A date-time group along the bottom edge, in the standard DDHHMMZ MON YY form, set
in black on a white plate so the zone boundary is a surface and not a suffix. The
large time and the date are local; only the plate is UTC.
- Date in army, ISO 8601, US or ordinal form. Every one of them carries the year,
because the date-time group does.
CHOICES
- Two of the six rings can be reassigned: daylight can become calories or floors,
heart rate can become stress or pulse ox. Daylight needs a position fix, so anyone
who never has one gets a ring that works.
- The sitting alert can be switched off. The reading stays; only the prompt goes.
WHAT IT WILL NOT DO
No invented numbers. When a reading is unavailable the ring says so instead of
drawing a zero. No focus score, no readiness index built from data that cannot
support one.
Pure black and white, drawn pixel by pixel for the 1-bit display, and checked against
a measured map of which pixels the case actually leaves visible.
