Run an orienteering course from your watch, without the watch doing the orienteering for you. Load your controls as text, pick a course from the list, and punch each control yourself with the START button. The watch times every leg and records the whole run as a normal activity. NO ARROW, NO DISTANCE, ON PURPOSE Most watch navigation points at the control and counts down the metres. This app shows neither. Being led to a control is not orienteering, and a GPS that drifts under tree cover will lead you wrong anyway. The map and compass in your hand are what find the control; the watch tells you which control is next and how long you have been out. GPS runs quietly in the background to record your track, so you can study your route choice afterwards. Punching is manual for the same reason. You press START at the control, the way you would stamp a card, so a drifting fix can never credit you with a control you never reached. It also means you can run any course you have coordinates for, with no timing system and no start box. ON THE WATCH - Course list showing control count and course length - Control code in large type, with total and leg clocks - Punch list: legs already punched by time, legs still ahead by distance - Split table at the finish, kept on the watch so you can read it later - Pause menu to resume, skip a control you cannot find, finish early, or throw the run away - An optional proximity buzz, off by default, for training rather than events RECORD YOUR OWN COURSES You do not have to type a course at all. Choose Record a course, walk the terrain, and mark each control where you stand. The first mark is the start, the rest are numbered automatically or picked by hand at each control, and every mark is confirmed before it is written down. Marking refuses when there is no usable fix, because a control saved at a guessed position is worse than none. When you finish you keep three things: the walk as an activity, the course on the watch so you can run it again, and one waypoint per control in the watch's location list. Those waypoints sync to Garmin Connect and export as GPX, which is how a surveyed course gets onto a computer. LOADING COURSES Courses are typed into the app settings from the Connect IQ phone app or Garmin Express. No account, no server, and once saved it works entirely offline. There are five course fields and each one can hold more than one course: [City Sprint] S 40.99012 29.02345 31 40.99120 29.02501 32 40.99230 29.02610 F 40.98990 29.02300 S is the start and F the finish; the codes in between are the ones on your control description sheet. The parser is deliberately forgiving, because you are typing on a phone: one line or many, separated by spaces, commas or semicolons, comma decimals for European keyboards, bare latitude/longitude pairs if you would rather not type codes, and # for comments. Anything it cannot read is listed by name in the menu rather than silently dropped, so a typo never turns into a control in the wrong place. WHAT GETS RECORDED Every punch closes a lap, so leg times and paces appear in Garmin Connect on their own with no extra work. Each lap also carries the control number as a FIT field, which means the activity file doubles as a punch record. Pick trail run, road run, hike or bike in the settings. DEVICES 150 devices running Connect IQ 3.0 or newer: fenix, Forerunner, epix, Instinct, Venu, vivoactive, MARQ, Edge, Descent, Approach and more. The screen layout is measured from the display rather than fixed in pixels, so it fits everything from a 176x176 Instinct to a 480x800 Edge. PRIVACY Nothing is collected, transmitted or shared. Your position never leaves the watch except inside the activity file, which syncs to your own Garmin account exactly like any other run.
