Backyard is the companion for any backyard ultra runner. It tells you which lap you're on, how long until the next bell, and — most importantly — whether at your current pace you'll make it back in time to rest. Here's what it does: • It tells you whether you'll make it. That's the main thing: at the pace you're running, it works out how much time you'll have left over to rest before the next bell — or how far behind you are and need to push. • Corral warnings at 3, 2 and 1 minute, with a chime, vibration and the screen going red, so the bell never catches you away from the line. • You set the race start time and the bells anchor to it. It doesn't matter when you press start. • You set the yard's duration and distance, which makes it as useful for training as for racing. • Yards can close themselves, by distance or by GPS when you come back through the start — or by hand with the LAP button, whichever you prefer. • It saves your full activity, with the track, so afterwards you review it in Garmin Connect or anything you've linked, Strava included. • You choose which screens you see and in what order. There are six; keep the ones that help you. • Very light, built to last through long races without eating your watch. • Six languages — English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese — and it picks whichever your watch is set to. • Runs on about a hundred Garmin watches: fēnix, Forerunner, epix, enduro, Venu, vívoactive, Instinct, MARQ and Descent. Ver 1.13.0 - The automatic finish line no longer marks when you pass near the start mid-loop: it now requires 90 % of the loop covered, not half. Fixes figure-eight and out-and-back courses. Ver 1.12.0 - If you're still out on the loop in the last three minutes, the corral no longer hides your screens: it pops up briefly at each alert (3, 2 and 1 minute) and returns to what you were looking at, with the Margin and Lap rings in its colour. If you've already marked, it stays as before. Ver 1.11.0 - The Margin screen shows your current pace larger, with its unit also in large text. - The «done / target» line is gone from that screen: the ring already shows the distance covered and the Yard screen gives it exactly. Ver 1.10.0 - New «Safety margin» setting: the minutes you want in reserve are taken off the margin before it is shown. - The Margin screen shows your current pace instead of the yard average. - On MIP displays (Forerunner 255/955, fēnix 7, Instinct) all text is pure ink, no greys. - Single-figure screens move the figure up and make room for the lines below, which now grow with the large text setting too. Ver 1.9.2 - New «Text size» setting: normal or large. With large, labels and figures go up one size wherever they fit. - Secondary text (distance to go, time and battery) no longer uses the dimmest grey, which was hard to read on MIP displays. - The QR code in «About» now opens the runner's manual at backyardultrasantodomingo.com/garmin. Ver 1.8.0 - New «Background» setting: dark or light. On MIP displays (Forerunner 255/955, fēnix 7, Instinct) the light background reads much better in daylight; on AMOLED, dark saves battery. - Change it from Garmin Connect or on the watch, under Yard settings. - Warning colours (corral, margin, low battery) are the same on both backgrounds. Ver 1.7.0 - Touchscreen watches: set the start time with your finger, and tap the settings on the start screen to turn them on or off. - During the race the touchscreen only changes screens: the activity stops only with the START button and yards are marked only with the LAP button, never by an accidental touch. - Fixed: on small screens the warm-up time and battery line ran off the edge. Ver. 1.6.0 - When the app opens you set the start time, suggested as the next full hour. - The start screen shows the start time, the countdown and your settings. - If you don't press START, the race starts on its own at the start time. - Fixed: on small screens the warm-up time and battery line ran off the edge. Ver 1.4.1 - The Margin screen now comes first: it's the one you look at while running. - Pace now appears a minute into the yard instead of a kilometre in. Both pace fields used to sit blank for the first eight minutes of every hour. - The margin appears a minute in too. While the yard's own pace settles, it leans on your average race pace, so the figure no longer jumps whole minutes from one stride to the next. - Auto yard at the finish line is now on by default: a backyard course ends where it started, and marking it by hand thirty times is thirty chances to forget. The LAP button works exactly as before. - Fixed: if GPS hadn't locked when you started the race, the automatic finish line never marked a single yard. The point is now taken at the bell, with you standing on the line. - If you already had the app, these two new defaults don't touch your settings — change them from Settings.
