The journey starts the first time you open it. When a lap is done the next one begins; nothing is ever reset. The glance shows your lap and how far into it you are. The app shows the distance left as a ring around the screen's edge, and the month you will get round at your pace so far. The details hold your total, laps, average day, start date and how far to your next goal. On the way are 33 famous lengths, from the Golden Gate Bridge (2.7 km) on your first day to the Suez Canal, the Camino de Santiago, the Nile and the whole Great Wall of China, then on to Verne's twenty thousand leagues: twice round the world. When your total reaches one, the app opens on a card that says so: "You've travelled the Suez Canal, 193 km". From the details, swipe up or press down for the whole list: what you have done, what is next and how far, and what is still ahead. It counts the daily distance your watch already works out from your steps. Recorded walks and runs are part of it, so nothing is counted twice, and only what you walk from the first time you open it counts. The ETA needs one full day first; until then it says "ETA calculating" and how many hours are left. Distance is in km or mi, as your watch is set. The watch keeps 7 days of history, and the app reads it every 6 hours. If it cannot for more than 7 days (the watch switched off), those days are lost; nothing is guessed in their place. Only steps count: cycling and swimming do not. Removing the app deletes the journey; watch apps have no backup. Everything stays on your watch: no account, no phone app, nothing sent anywhere. One lap at 7 km a day is about 15 years. The ring is the long view, the goals the weeks and months between, and today's walk the short one.
