Rucking app for Instinct 2, 2S and 2X: pack weight in kg or lb, ruck calories by the Pandolf equation, saved as a real activity.
Free, with no ads and nothing to buy.
MADE FOR WATCHES WITHOUT A RUCKING MODE
Instinct 2, 2S and 2X have no Rucking activity of their own. This app brings ruck tracking to them, and it also runs on 100+ other Garmin watches: fenix 5 Plus to fenix 9 and fenix E, epix Gen 2 and Pro, Enduro, Enduro 3 and 4, Forerunner 55, 70, 165, 170, 245, 255, 265, 570, 745, 945, 955, 965 and 970, Venu 1 to 4, Venu Sq, Venu X1, vivoactive 4 to 6, Instinct 3, Instinct E, MARQ, D2 Air X10 and Mach, Descent and Approach S50/S70/S72 (full list under Compatible Devices). Outdoor rucks with GPS only (no treadmill mode yet).
YOUR PACK COUNTS IN THE CALORIES
Garmin's calorie number doesn't use your pack weight. Ruck calories use the Pandolf load-carriage equation (Pandolf, Givoni and Goldman, 1977): your body weight (from your Garmin profile, or set your own), pack weight, speed, uphill grade and terrain (road, trail, off-trail, sand). Downhill is counted as level ground. The grade comes from the watch's altitude (barometric where the watch has a barometer, else GPS) and is smoothed over a stretch of distance, so small altitude wobbles barely add calories on flat ground. You also see the calories without the pack, so you know what the pack added. Garmin's own calorie number is left as it is.
SET THE PACK ONCE
Pick 5-30 kg or 10-60 lb from a list, fine-tune with UP/DOWN (swipe on 2-button touch watches), or type the exact number in the app settings on your phone. Walking without weight? Choose No pack on the watch or in the phone settings. The app remembers it and shows it in the watch's own units.
WHAT YOU SEE DURING A RUCK
- Distance and pace together, time, heart rate with your HR zone
- Ruck calories, calories without the pack, pack weight and the current grade
- Ascent, average pace, average heart rate and laps
Auto lap every 1 km or 1 mile (optional). Dark or light background. On 2-button touch watches one screen shows time, distance, pace, heart rate and ruck calories.
IT WON'T LOSE YOUR RUCK
START pauses, it never ends the ruck. Save and Discard each ask you to confirm first. BACK marks a lap. On touch screens taps are locked and a swipe right can't close the app mid-ruck. Auto pause is off unless you turn it on. You can start before GPS is ready; the start screen shows "GPS: waiting" until then. The screen follows your watch's own timeout.
WHAT LANDS IN GARMIN CONNECT
The ruck is saved as a Hike under a name like "Ruck 20 kg" (or as a Walk if you choose that in the settings). Under the app's section of the activity: pack weight, ruck calories, calories without the pack, ruck work (kg-km or lb-mi) and terrain, plus ruck calories per lap and a ruck-calorie chart. Garmin's own "Pack Weight" box stays empty: Connect IQ apps cannot write it.
Rucks, ruck marches, weighted vest walks, loaded hikes with a backpack, tabbing and GORUCK-style events.
