A bare bulb hangs on a cord in a dark room. It swings from one edge of the screen to the other and never stops. It is the only light there is, and the time is scratched into the wall behind it — so you only ever see the digits the light happens to be touching. NOT A SPRITE BEING MOVED The cord, the glass, the filament, the pool of light on the wall and the shadows under the scratches are separate layers, and every one of them is worked out from where the bulb actually is, twelve and a half times a second. The light does not follow the bulb a frame later. It is the bulb. THE TIME APPEARS AND DISAPPEARS A digit on the far side of the wall is not dimmed — it is not there at all. As the bulb travels it comes out of the dark, reaches pure white at the moment the bulb passes it, and sinks back. Glance at your wrist and the swing hands you the time. WRITING ON THE WALL Date and battery scratched into the plaster and woven all over it in the wall's own tone, so it reads as part of the room rather than text on top of it. Two fields, eight kinds of data — date, weekday, battery, steps, calories, floors, intensity minutes — or nothing at all. Switch the whole thing off in the settings if you want a bare wall. A FAILING FILAMENT Below fifteen percent the bulb begins to stutter, and lower still it gutters and nearly dies. You read the battery without reading a number. There is also an optional flicker you can leave on all the time. RARE COMPANY About once in twenty glances a moth has found the light, or a cobweb has appeared in the corner overnight. Never both announced, never on a schedule — you just catch one now and then. 12 OR 24 HOURS — YOUR CHOICE Auto (follows your watch), 12-hour or 24-hour, set in the Garmin Connect app or in the settings menu on the watch itself. ALWAYS-ON The bulb goes out and the time stays behind as thin chalk outlines — about 0.7 % of the pixels lit, far below the AMOLED limit. Nothing animates in low power. LANGUAGES Settings and menus in 36 languages. The wall itself (time, date, battery) is drawn in the face's own hand-cut fonts and is shown in English.
