Open water swim apps all promise the same thing and keep getting the same review: the distance is wrong. Swim the same loop three times and the watch gives you three different numbers. The reason is simple: your wrist is under water half of every stroke, the GPS loses its fix, and when it comes back it jumps. Sightline does not just add up those jumps. It filters every fix through a Kalman filter, throws out positions that would mean swimming faster than three metres per second, and fills the gaps by counting your strokes and multiplying them by your own distance per stroke. That distance per stroke is learned from the first good minutes of each swim. Once you have turned around a buoy, Sightline also compares how far your strokes should have taken you with how far you actually moved, and the difference is the current: its speed and direction. From that it tells you how many degrees to aim upstream to swim a straight line back to the start, without a map. WHAT IT DOES - Distance from filtered GPS, with gaps bridged by strokes × your learned distance per stroke - Pace per 100 m or 100 yd, strokes per minute, distance per stroke and SWOLF over 25 m - Measures the current (speed and direction) once you have swum in more than one direction - Back-to-start pointer with distance, the angle to aim against the current and time to get there - Automatic loops when you pass the start buoy again, with the median loop and the spread between loops - Straightness: how much of your path went towards where you were heading, and a sketch of your track - Goal distance, intervals (presets or your own set) with rest countdown, and a CSS test that sets your threshold pace - Vibration every 100, 250, 500 or 1000 m and pace alerts against your CSS-based target - Records an open water swim activity in Garmin Connect, with the corrected distance, stroke rate and current as extra fields - After each swim: how sure the distance is (raw GPS against Sightline, share bridged by strokes) - The last thirty swims, five languages, metres or yards, and a glance with your last swim and this week against your weekly goal WHAT IT NEEDS - A watch with GPS and an accelerometer - A minute or two of steady swimming with GPS before the distance per stroke settles - Nothing else: no phone, no account, no internet Touch is switched off while swimming because water on the glass causes false taps; START opens the swim menu and BACK marks a lap. Sightline is a training aid, not a safety device: always swim with a buddy or a tow float.
