Description

Quarters puts the hour in the middle and nothing above it. One large numeral fills the dial and changes in a single step on the hour. The minute is read from a track of sixty marks around it, the live minute drawn heavy - a position on a scale rather than a hand floating above one. Four complications sit in a band around the rim, one per quarter, their figures following the curve. Only the quarter the minute is currently crossing is lit; the other three sit back at a fraction of the ink. Between o'clock and quarter past, the top right reads bright and the rest go quiet. The dial tells you where you are in the hour before you have read a number. Readings that are a percentage draw a luminous green gauge along the inner edge of their segment - battery, stress, body battery, pulse ox and sleep score. Green only on the live quarter, so it means "look here" rather than becoming wallpaper. Drawn entirely in code. Every numeral is a real typeface converted to vector outlines and filled on the watch, not a shipped bitmap, so it is equally sharp on a 360px Forerunner and a 454px epix Pro. The hour sizes itself to fit the minute track, which is why a 24-hour "23" sits inside the marks instead of running through them. COMPLICATIONS Four slots, one per quarter, chosen independently. 42 data sources: heart rate, body battery, steps, calories, floors climbed, intensity minutes, stress, sleep score, pulse ox, respiration rate, recovery time, training status, VO2 max run and bike, weekly run and bike distance, race predictors and race paces from 5K to marathon, altitude, sea-level pressure, temperature, high/low, solar input, sunrise, sunset, current weather and three-day forecast, calendar events, notifications, wheelchair pushes, last golf score, battery, date, weekday and day. ON THE WRIST (touchscreen models) - Tap the hour in the centre - cycles the palette - Tap a quarter - opens the Garmin app behind that reading On non-touch watches everything is set from MENU / Watch Face / Settings, on the watch itself. No phone required. Slots are named by where they land - Top right, Bottom right, Bottom left, Top left - so you always know which one you are changing. 31 PALETTES Ivory, Slate, Moss, Copper, Graphite, Onyx, Midnight, Ember, Forest, Indigo, Char, Teal, Wine, Olive, Gunmetal, Oxblood, Bronze, Mono, Paper, Stealth, Amber, Terminal, Cyan, Red, Orange, Lime, Ice, Azure, Violet, Yellow and Gold. Every element takes its colour from the palette, including the minute mark, and the dimmed quarters stay legible on the high-contrast ones. ALWAYS-ON A separate design, not a dimmed copy: the hour traced in outline, and the minute riding a wide circle out near the glass. It drifts slowly so no pixel holds a single colour, and lights around 6% of the panel. 12- or 24-hour follows your watch's own setting. The name is the idea: the rim is four quarters, and the one you are living in is the one that is lit.
