Description
Tennis Analyzer turns your Garmin watch into a tennis tracker. Wear it on your racket hand: it counts and recognises your shots, keeps the score of your match and saves everything to your activity.
SUPPORT & DEVELOPMENT
The app is completely free with all features fully unlocked. If you enjoy using it and would like to support the ongoing development of new features, bug fixes, and improvements, you can buy me a virtual coffee at: https://buycoffee.to/tennisapp
WHAT IT TRACKS
• Every shot, sorted by type: forehand, backhand, serve, slice, volley and smash
• A power index from 0 to 100 for each shot, with your session average and best
• Full swings: how many forehands and backhands had a complete follow-through
• The match score with tiebreaks: best of 3 or 5 sets, one set, pro set to 8, Fast4, tiebreak only and super tiebreak only, with optional no-ad scoring and a super tiebreak instead of the final set
• Rally length, heart rate with zones, steps, calories and time
HOW TO USE IT
1. Open the app. Nothing is recorded until you choose what you are playing, so the walk to the court does not count.
2. Hold UP to open the menu and choose Start match (then the format and the court surface) or Start training.
3. During a match press UP when you win a point and DOWN when your opponent wins it. BACK undoes the last point.
4. START moves to the next page: Last session, Score (or Training), Strokes, Power, Effort and Clock. On touchscreen watches you can also tap or swipe.
5. When you are done, open the menu and choose Save and exit. The watch vibrates and confirms the save with the time, the number of shots and the final score.
STATISTICS ON THE WATCH
Menu → Statistics keeps your history on the watch:
• Matches, all together or by surface (hard, clay, grass, carpet): your last match compared with your average, the win-loss record with sets and points, and average rally length, heart rate, set time and match time
• Trainings, the last one or all of them: shots by type, average and strongest power, full swings, serve accuracy, heart rate and steps
TRAINING AND SERVE DRILL
Training has no scoring and every shot is counted. Turn on Serve drill in the menu to count every shot as a serve. Press UP after a serve that landed in (a serve without UP counts as a fault) and the watch shows your serve percentage.
GOOD TO KNOW
• Wear the watch on the hand that holds the racket. The app was developed and tested on court with a right-handed player wearing a fenix 6X Pro. Left-handed players and wearing the watch on the other wrist can be set in the settings, but have been tested less.
• Forehand, backhand and serve are recognised most reliably. Slice, volley and smash are harder to tell apart with a single wrist sensor.
• A serve and a smash are almost the same movement for the wrist. The app uses the point: the first overhead shot of your service point is a serve, later ones are smashes.
• Ball speed in km/h is experimental. It is calculated, not measured, it is not calibrated yet and it is shown only for shots measured with high confidence, which is rare. Until then the Power page shows the power index.
• Shot types, power, rally length and points won are also written to the activity's FIT file as developer fields.
• The app works offline and does not send your data anywhere. The activity goes to Garmin Connect like any other, and the statistics stay on the watch.
SETTINGS
In the Garmin Connect app: your watch → Connect IQ apps → Tennis Analyzer → Settings. Racket hand, which wrist the watch is on, wrist-to-sweet-spot distance, sample rate, gyroscope, detection sensitivity, vibration on each shot or on a short swing, full-swing threshold, power and ball speed calibration, default match format, no-ad scoring, super tiebreak and who serves first.
Languages on the watch: English and Polish.
What is new
Better serve, smash and volley recognition, and net approaches from GPS. SERVES AND SMASHES: a small movement before your serve, such as bouncing the ball with the racket, no longer counts as a first serve, so your real second serve is no longer counted as a smash. A serve hit before you saved the previous point now counts as a serve, and the second serve is recognised by its shape only, which removes false serves after slow rally shots. Smashes in a rally and in training have their own shape now, so most of them are no longer counted as forehands. On the match the changes were checked against, 76 serves and 6 smashes became 70 serves and 1 smash, the one real smash of that match. After a match ends, overhead shots still count as smashes. VOLLEYS: the shot detector used to reject short, sharp volleys before they could be recognised. It now lets them through and counts them as volleys. Soft, blocked volleys still count as forehands or backhands. NET APPROACHES (needs Record court movement (GPS) on, outdoor courts only): the watch counts the points in which you moved at least 5 m towards the net, and in a match how many of them you won. You will find them on a new page after the last ball (At the net), on a new card in Statistics → Points and on the effort card in Statistics → Trainings. In a match the watch finds the net from the change of ends. In training it estimates it from your movement, so the number appears only after longer play and is less certain. Without GPS nothing changes and no empty numbers are shown. Net approaches are not sent to Garmin Connect. ACTIVITY FILE: the file now also records who won each point and what kind of point it was, plus the court surface, so match analysis tools can break down errors and winners by stroke and replay the score point by point. Garmin Connect looks the same. Everything else works as in 2.4.0.
