Description

Thirds keeps track of the fuel in your boat and tells you how far you can go. It follows the rule of thirds that boating courses teach: one third of the fuel to go out, one third to come back and one third in reserve. On the water it shows how many nautical miles you have left before you should turn back, using the GPS distance to your home port and what your engine burns at the speed you are actually running. Thirds learns your boat. Every time you fill the tank to full, it compares the liters that went in with the time the engine ran in each speed band, and fits a burn curve to your own engine. From that curve it works out the most economical speed, so you see how much extra range you get by easing off the throttle. It also counts engine hours and reminds you when service is due. WHAT IT DOES - Fuel left, out-and-back radius and range to reserve at the most economical speed - Live turn-back distance from the rule of thirds and the fuel needed for the return trip - Vibration when the turn point is half a mile away and again when it is time to turn back - Burn curve learned from full-to-full fills and GPS tracks, with a fit error shown per fill - Most economical speed and the extra range it gives compared to your current speed - Rule of thirds bar: out, back and reserve, with where you are now - Home port saved by GPS, or the trip start, plus a detour factor for the way back - Log a full fill, a partial fill or read the gauge in eighths - Engine hours with a service interval and reminder - FIT recording as a boating activity with fuel left, range, distance to home and burn rate - Nautical miles, kilometers or miles; liters or US gallons - History of 30 fills and 30 trips, and a glance with fuel and radius WHAT IT NEEDS - A watch with GPS - Your tank size and the fuel burn at cruise speed as a starting point; the curve improves with every full fill - Thirds is a planning aid, not a navigation or safety device. Fuel figures are estimates from a model; wind, current, load and engine condition change real consumption. Always carry a reserve and check your fuel gauge.
