Description

Every cyclist and runner knows the feeling of a heavy day without knowing it is an 8 m/s headwind. Vind puts an arrow on it. Vind is a data field, not a separate app: add it to a data screen in any of your activities, and it shows what the device cannot measure itself. RELATIVE WIND • The arrow points the way the wind pushes you, drawn against your current heading, so a glance tells you whether the wind is with you • Green within 45 degrees from behind, red within 45 degrees from the front, grey across you • Wind speed is the largest number on the field, with gusts in brackets, in m/s, km/h, knots or Beaufort • Standing still there is no heading, so the field shows the compass direction the wind comes from, in grey, never a stale arrow RAIN, THE NEXT 90 MINUTES • A row of blocks, one per 10 minutes, where the height is the intensity • Five-minute radar nowcast where MET Norway's radar reaches: Norway, Sweden, Finland and the far east of Denmark. Elsewhere, most of Denmark included, the hourly forecast, so a brief shower can be missed • Gusts are not published everywhere; where missing, the brackets are left out FEELS-LIKE AND SUNSET • Feels-like temperature, so you can judge the layer you are wearing • A countdown to sunset that turns red when your estimated time home is longer than the daylight you have left. How home is estimated is a setting • Without an average speed to work from, it stays neutral rather than guessing TIDE WORKS IN FIVE PLACES, NOT EVERYWHERE Please read this before you buy. • The tide line needs a tide station within 50 km of you. In practice that means Norway, Denmark, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and the United States • Anywhere else, Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom included, there is no tide line. The field leaves the row out rather than showing a guess • Where it works, it shows time to the next high or low water and whether the water is rising or falling • Wind, rain, feels-like and sunset work anywhere on earth. Only the tide row is limited ONE-TIME PURCHASE, NO SUBSCRIPTION Behind the field runs a small weather server that fetches and caches forecasts and tide tables for you. It has a monthly cost, and the one-time price is set to cover it. WHAT IT NEEDS • Your phone in range with the Garmin Connect app running, plus a GPS fix: the device has no connection, and the field must know which area to ask about • Refreshed within minutes of starting a recording and every 15 minutes while it runs; almost never otherwise, to save battery and data. Before the first fetch it says WAITING FOR DATA; past 30 minutes it shows the age; past two hours, NO DATA (2h+) • Wind, gusts, wind angle and feels-like are saved to the activity as graphs and summary fields, never while data is missing or too old RIDING WITH A GARMIN EDGE? Vind Ride is the edition made for bike computers. It shows the wind relative to the direction you ride, rain for the next 90 minutes and a wind chill that counts your own speed. Try it free for 7 days. Find it in the Connect IQ Store: apps.garmin.com/apps/d060b3a6-f74e-4828-8fe7-b52cea58b360 Vind builds on open data, and the licences require credit: • Weather data from MET Norway (CC BY 4.0) • Tidal data from the Norwegian Mapping Authority / Kartverket (CC BY 4.0) • Tidal data from the Danish Meteorological Institute (CC BY 4.0) • Tidal data for the United States from NOAA CO-OPS • Sunrise and sunset are calculated on our server with the NOAA General Solar Position Calculations CC BY 4.0 licence: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Privacy: your position leaves the device only as a 5-character geohash, roughly 5 km across. No exact coordinates and no account. Privacy policy: api.offoverdrive.com/privacy

What is new

• Light rain now shows in the rain row, and the blocks reach full height at heavy rain • Faster first reading when you start a recording, and fewer background updates to save battery and data • More stable: errors show as text instead of crashing
