Description
Sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset, moon phase and the traditional solunar periods, computed on the watch from your last known position. No phone, no server, no account: everything except the weather works with the phone left at home.
AT A GLANCE
• Glance: moon phase, the next major or minor period, pressure with its 3-hour trend, today's score.
• Today: a 24-hour timeline with night, twilights, day, the major and minor periods and the current time.
• 7 days: a score per day, to pick the day before picking the hour.
• Sun: nautical and civil twilight, sunrise, solar noon, sunset, and the time zone used.
• Moon: moonrise, transit, moonset, lower transit, phase, illumination and age.
• Pressure: current reading, 3-hour change (WMO definition) and a 24-hour graph from the watch barometer.
• Score: 0–100 with its full breakdown on its own screen.
• Your catches: log a catch in two presses (START), with species, period, phase, pressure and trend saved automatically. The app shows in which periods and trends YOUR catches happened, and with fewer than 5 it tells you they are too few to mean anything yet.
WHO IT IS FOR
Anglers on reservoirs and rivers, stand hunters (twilight to the minute) and anyone who just wants the glance. It also serves landscape photographers (golden and blue hour, moonrise), stargazers (moon-free nights), hikers (light left before the descent, pressure trend), farmers and beekeepers, leisure boaters, and anyone keeping a field notebook: the catch log takes sightings too. Coastal anglers: see NO TIDES below.
WHAT IS WHAT
Sun and moon times are astronomy, computed with published algorithms (USNO low-precision sun, Astronomical Almanac moon) and checked against the U.S. Naval Observatory at ten places from 55° S to 70° N on the solstices and equinoxes: within 2 minutes for the sun and 5 for the moon. Solunar periods are a tradition (Knight, 1926), not science: the app shows them because people use them, and says so. The pressure trend uses the standard meteorological definition. The daily score is a formula we chose, with weights you can see on the breakdown screen. The only thing with real evidence behind it is your own catch log.
SETTINGS (from Garmin Connect)
• Major period length (minutes, 60–240): default 120
• Minor period length (minutes, 30–120): default 60
• Species list (comma-separated, max 12; empty = default)
• Show the daily score: on by default. Off hides the score screen, the 7-day screen, the score line and the glance number; everything else stays.
• Pressure unit: hPa, inHg, mmHg
NOTES AND LIMITS
• NO TIDES. A tide prediction needs harmonic constants for each port; they do not fit on the watch. If you fish the coast and need tides, this app is not enough on its own.
• Position: the app uses the last position the watch knows (last activity, weather position). GPS is only switched on when you ask for a fix from the menu. Without any position ever obtained, no times are shown: the app asks for a fix instead of guessing.
• Watches without a barometer show no pressure trend. With raw (non sea-level) pressure, a change of altitude looks like a change of weather and the app warns about it.
• Weather is the only thing that needs the phone: it comes from Garmin's weather service and only feeds the score and the context of each catch. Weather older than 3 hours is ignored and shows as n/a in the score. Everything else works offline.
• Times are shown to the minute, in the time zone of the position when the watch can tell it.
What is new
• New devices: Enduro 4 and Approach S72 (43 and 47 mm).
• Venu 4, vívoactive 6, Venu X1 and Approach S72: the menu (Set position, Delete last catch, What is each thing) now opens by swiping from the right edge. Before, these watches could not open it.
• The "No position yet" screen showed a broken arrow character; fixed.
