Description

Altitude data field with VAM zone colors, automatic climb detection and a summit summary. DESCRIPTION Altitude Color Field shows at a glance how fast you are gaining height: the whole background lights up in the color of your current VAM zone (vertical meters per hour). The field detects climbs and descents on its own and always shows the values that matter right now. It shares its look with Power Color Field and Speed Color Field, so all fields sit nicely side by side on one data screen. FEATURES • Automatic by terrain: altitude on the flat, VAM on climbs, gradient on descents and the climb's elevation gain at the summit – always large in the center. • Background in 7 zone colors (white, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, purple) by VAM, descents in their own blue scale. A small buffer at the zone boundaries prevents flickering. • Altitude colored by the power loss in thin air (rule of thumb after Bassett, not acclimatized): about −5 % at 1000 m, −12 % at 2000 m. Blue from about 420 m up to purple from about 1950 m. • On climbs: gradient, average VAM of the climb, total ascent and average power (in the colors of your power zones). • Summit summary for 30 seconds: elevation gain, time, average VAM, average gradient, average power and the category as on Strava (CAT4 to HC). It appears after one minute on the flat; if the road climbs again afterwards, the climb continues. • Climb detection modeled on Strava: from 3 % over 100 m, at least 10 m of gain and 3 % on average. Short dips and flat parts stay in the climb; it only ends after losing more than 10 m (or 20 %) of height or after 3 minutes without a new high point. • Average VAM as on Strava: elevation gain over the whole time of the climb, flat parts included. • Steady values: VAM and gradient are computed with a least-squares fit, barometer noise and altitude calibrations are filtered out. • In Garmin Connect: VAM chart, average VAM per climb as a chart and the average uphill VAM of the whole ride. • Pauses: when the timer stops, the background turns light gray and VAM drops to 0. • Crash-safe: if the field restarts during a ride, the current climb and the totals continue. • Adapts automatically to any field size, from 1 to 10 fields per page. Labels are shortened step by step when space is tight (GRADE → GRD → GR). • English and German, meters or feet depending on your device settings. SETUP 1. Install the data field and add it to a data page of your cycling profile: Activity profile › Data screens › select a field › Connect IQ › Altitude Color Field. 2. Optionally open the settings in the Connect IQ app: – View: automatic / flat / climb / descent / summit (for devices without a touchscreen) – FTP (only needed if no FTP is stored in your Garmin profile) – VAM zone limits in m/h (default 300 / 600 / 900 / 1200 / 1500 / 1800) – Gradient zone limits in % (default 3 / 6 / 9 / 12 / 15 / 18) ON THE ROAD • Tap the field to switch the view: automatic → flat → climb → descent → summit (touch devices). A chosen view stays; climb and summit then show the current or last climb. • A climb appears after 10 m of gain, but it is counted from the foot of the climb. REQUIREMENTS • Edge with a barometric altimeter • Power meter optional (for the average power on climbs) SUPPORTED DEVICES Edge 520 Plus, 530, 540, 550, 830, 840, 850, 1030, 1030 Plus, 1030 Bontrager, 1040, 1050, Explore 2, Edge MTB. NOTES • The VAM values in Garmin Connect only appear if the field is on a data page during the ride. • Privacy: the field sends no data. Permissions: recording (VAM in the FIT file) and user profile (FTP for the power colors).

What is new

VERSION 1.1.0 - Consistent text color across all Color Fields: white on every colored background, including yellow and orange; black only on white and light gray. VERSION 1.0.3 - Larger pills and more readable labels in wide, shallow data fields. The main value adapts to the available space. VERSION 1.0.2 • Lower battery use: less work when redrawing, crash protection saves every 5 minutes instead of every minute (pause and stop still save immediately). • FTP setting: 0 = from your Garmin profile, a value entered here now takes precedence (as in Power Color Field). Important: if you had entered your own FTP, please enter it again. • More robust start: if the Edge cannot set up recording at power-on, the field keeps running anyway. VERSION 1.0.0 – First release • Altitude, VAM and gradient with zone colors, automatic views for flat, climb, descent and summit. • Climb detection and average VAM modeled on Strava, summit summary with category (CAT4 to HC). • VAM chart and average VAM per climb in Garmin Connect. • Crash-safe: the current climb and the totals survive a restart.
